Ann Jacobson
Studio Manager at the DanceWorks Crossroads
location is a graduate of the University of Iowa Dance
Department. She performed in several student showcases
as an undergraduate and is currently performing with the
Ray Terrill Dance Company. Ann has taught at several dance
studios both here, as well as in Iowa. She teaches Jazz,
Jazz Funk, Hip Hop and Tap at Dance Works.
Denise Vogt
Our Ballet Director, trained in London,
England, and has earned her teaching certificates from
the Royal Academy of Dance in London for elementary, intermediate,
and advanced ballet. Her performing experience includes
the Kiel Ballet Ensemble, Osnabruck Contemporary Dance
Theatre, and the Kassel Ballet Co. in Germany. She started
her teaching career by opening her own school at age 19
in London, and has since guest taught in London, California,
Germany, and at the University of Minnesota and Ballet
Arts Minnesota.
Andrea Sjogren
Director of the Tap Program has been
dancing since the age of 5. She was a member of the Gustavus
Adolphus College Dance Co. and has been teaching tap,
ballet & jazz for the past several years. She regularly
attends “master classes” and is a member of
the Int’l Tap Association. Andrea recently completed
her Master’s Degree in Education at Concordia University.
Barry Leon
Trained in tap, jazz & ballet,
he was principal dancer with Pennsylvania Ballet, New
Jersey Ballet, Feld Ballet, American Repertory Ballet,
and North Carolina Dance Theatre. Former artistic director
of Buffalo Ballet Theater. Currently Ballet Master for
Metropolitan Ballet for the Twin Cities and a teacher
at the U of M & Ballet Arts Minnesota. He is a member
of the New York Hall of Fame. Barry teaches the upper
levels of ballet at Dance Works.
David Stright
He has an extensive background as a
ballet instructor, professional performer, high school
teacher, and coach. David began his studies at the Andaházy
School of Classical Ballet and Minnesota Dance Theatre
and School. He performed internationally with “Up
With People” and has danced many major roles, such
as Loyce Houlton’s Nutcracker Fantasy, Giselle,
Pachelbel, Puss and Boots, Coppelia, and many more. He
teaches ballet and pas de Deux at Dance Works.
Gwen Oukrop
She has been dancing for 30+ years
and teaching for 15. She has taken Master Tap Classes
from Bril Barrett, Dianne Walker, Tap Dogs, Lane Alexander,
and Savion Glover. She teaches Beginning Tap and Ballet
classes, A-B Three’s and Adult Tap classes. She
loves working with children & adults to instill a
love for dance. Come and join the fun!
Susan Malecha
She has been with DanceWorks for 22
years starting this season, teaching all levels of Tap
with an emphasis in Tap technique. She previously performed
with the Super Taps Dance Troupe under the direction of
tap dance master Char Weiss.
Julie Berg
She is new to DanceWorks this year
and will be teaching Contemporary Ballet. She is an award-wining
choreographer and has taught and performed in Chicago
and Houston. She was the resident choreographer for Houston
Dance Theatre, Houston, TX. Julie is a certified Pilates
Teacher, and will also teach Pilates. She received her
BS in dance with a minor in kinesiology from Western Michigan
University.
Terry Field
She graduated with a B.F.A. in dance
from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. She has performed
professionally in Arizona and in Washington, D.C. and
was an adjunct faculty member at Northern Virginia Community
College. While residing in Virginia, Terry developed a
successful Child Development Creative Arts program. She
brings her experience, professionalism and love of dance
to Dance Works working with our A-B Threes, KinderMoves
and Contemporary classes.
Maria Boscaino
She is from New York City where she
trained as a ballet dancer and taught ballet and modern
to children and adults. She has created a special series
of classical programs for children that combine the choreography
of Isadora Duncan with tales from Greek mythology. Maria
teaches elementary and adult ballet at DanceWorks.
Melissa Berberena
She began dancing at the age of 5.
She trained in all forms of dance, especially jazz, tap
& danceline at Dance Arts Center in Eden Prairie.
She has been teaching for 7 years. Melissa teaches danceline
and jazz funk classes.
Sophie Ruhl
Sophie has trained at DanceWorks for
12 years and this will be her fourth year teaching here.
She teaches Ballet level IV, and assists with Nutcracker
choreography.
Ted Sothern
He has performed with the Minnesota
Dance Theatre, Washington Ballet, Boston Ballet, North
Carolina Dance Theatre & Atlanta Ballet and has danced
the role of the Nutcracker Prince in Lakeville City Ballet’s
production of The Nutcracker. He has been a guest teacher
at the Minnetonka Dance Theatre and principal ballet teacher
with Diane’s World of Dance. He will be teaching
ballet here at DanceWorks.
Colleen Barber
She graduated from the U of M and is
certified by the Physicalmind Institute in Advanced Pilates
Matwork and Standing Pilates. She studied Ballet, Contemporary
and Jazz for over 20 years primarily with Minnesota Dance
Theater. She also has developed and taught dance-training
programs for competitive figure skaters. She will teach
ballet and Pilates.
Ben Johnson
He is a current member of locally based
James Sewell Ballet Company will serve as a guest teacher
throughout the year.
Frederick Vogt
He has danced professionally in Europe
with various companies and will serve as a guest teacher
throughout the year.
Adjunct Dance Works Instructors
Matthew Keefe
He holds a BFA in Dance from the University
of Iowa. He has danced professionally with several major
companies. He is an award-winning choreographer of more
than 30 ballets and teaches and choreographs throughout
the United States.
